The Caledonian Forest, a unique ecosystem of Scots pine, Juniper, Rowan and other hardy tree species, once colonised more than three and a half million acres of the Scottish landscape. Today, with an increasing demand for timber production, man has taken control of the land, and what we are left with is a devastated landscape. The Caledonian Forest has shrunk to less than five percent of its original Size, and with deer and sheep grazing over the land, eating newly germinated seedlings, there is very little opportunity for the ecosystem to naturally heal itself.
’Caledonia’ is a project documenting deforestation and man’s control over the forest, showing the remnants of dead caledonian pine trees relics preserved from the past, and a hope of rewilding our beautiful country, bringing balance to the natural environment.
